Ellis Island passenger lists: search free
Search Ellis Island passenger lists free at the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation site. Searching is free. You read each manifest page as an image.
The lists cover arrivals at the Port of New York, most of them from 1892 to 1924. Names were not changed at Ellis Island. Inspectors checked arrivals against lists written at the port of departure.
How to search
- Get the year from the census or naturalization papers. A year of arrival narrows the search to a few ships.
- Search the Foundation site by name. Try the spelling used in the home country, not the later American spelling.
- If the name misses, use the Steve Morse forms. His free search pages query the same index with more options, such as sounds-like and town.
- Read both pages of the manifest. From
1907the second page names the nearest relative left behind and the person they were joining. - Attach the manifest image to your tree. With the image attached, the arrival is PROVEN in RootsFree.
