Move your tree from MyHeritage

Guide ยท 4 min readChecked Sources linked at the end

MyHeritage lets you export your tree as a GEDCOM file. The file has no photos, so save those separately. Then import the GEDCOM and the photo folder into RootsFree at /tree/.

Export before you cancel, so the tree is safe on your own computer whatever happens to the account.

How to move the tree

  1. Export the GEDCOM. In MyHeritage, open Family tree, then Manage trees, and choose Export to GEDCOM. Download the file from the email link.
  2. Save the photos. Download the photos you want from each person's profile into one folder.
  3. Import into RootsFree. At /tree/, import the .ged file plus the photo folder. Photos attach where the file names match.
  4. Check a few people. Open two or three families and compare them with MyHeritage before you close the account.
  5. Then cancel if you want to. Cancel through the store or account you paid with. Keep the confirmation.

In their own words

MyHeritage's GEDCOM export likewise contains the tree without the images.
